John Sarbanes, the Democratic Party nominee for Maryland’s district, is back at it again. Sarbane’s history in politics takes the charts dating back to 1977 when his father was first elected U.S. senator from Maryland. Paul Sarbanes was the longest serving senator in Maryland history, serving from 1977 to 2007.

John Sarbanes was born on May 22, 1962 in Baltimore. He graduated from the Gilman School in 1980 and pursued higher education at Princeton University and Harvard Law School.

After graduating college, John Sarbanes’ first job was working for the U.S District Court for the District of Maryland. He was the court clerk under Judge J. Frederick Motz. Shortly thereafter, Sarbanes began working for Venable LLP, a law firm in Baltimore. He remained there from 1989 to 2006. Eventually, Venable LLP would be one of his largest political donors.

Sarbanes first beat John White in 2006 to become the representative for congressional District 3 and was re-elected in 2008, 2010 and 2012.

While in Congress, Sarbanes said he has helped to expand higher education opportunities through financial assistance programs, Pell Grants. He also created laws to help make it easier for students to repay their college loans after graduation. He was also a supporter of President Obama’s Affordable Care Act to reform health care.
