Coppin State University defeats Lady Bears in MEAC Tournament

The MSU Lady Bears ends the season losing to cross-town rival.

The Morgan State University Lady Bears fell short to Coppin State University in the first round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament with a final score of 50-48 on Monday night.

Coppin pulled off this Victory after coming off a 70-47 blowout loss on Thursday night.

The game was closely contested game was a result of poor shooting on both sides.

Defensively, Coppin tightly guarded star forward and first team All-MEAC selection Adre’onia Coleman. She finished the game with just 10-points after averaging 16.5 points per game in the regular season.

In the third quarter Coppin went on a 7-0 run to give them a lead of (36-29).

Morgan answered back in the fourth quarter with clutch free throws and a tough jumper made by Ashia McCalla. McCalla lead the Bears in points finishing with 14.

Her contributions tied the score was (44-44). But in the closing minutes of the game, Morgan committed two costly fouls that gave Coppin extra possessions. They committed a lane violation on a free throw attempt and snatched away a possible two-point lead.

At the buzzer, Coppin guard Kaiya Coleman, scored a layup that sealed the game for her team. She finished with 15-points and three steals.

The Lady Bears finished the 2018-2019 year with a record of 10-21.

Coppin will now move on to face the third seeded Bethune-Cookman on Thursday in the next round of the MEAC tournament.
