A Morgan State University student has announced in a social media posting that she’s been selected to join the university’s Board of Regents as its student member for the 2026-2027 school year.
Malaya Mason, a senior political science major, recently completed a term as the president of Morgan’s Black Girls Vote chapter and is an honors student.
Morgan’s Board of Regents appoints the university president, sets admission standards, reviews and approves university policies, budgets and establishes the regulatory frameworks within which each department operates.
All appointees must be confirmed by the governor, the student regent serves a one-year term while the other appointees serve a five-year term.
According to Gov. Wes Moore’s press office, Mason is still waiting to be confirmed by the appointments office and will assume her new position once Champion Ojo, the current student regent, resigns from his seat.
Ojo’s term concluded at the end of the 2025-26 academic year, but a spokesperson in Moore’s office said in an email that because the regents’ position must be confirmed by the state Senate and the recommendation was not submitted during the legislative session, the office cannot move forward without a resignation from the current student in the seat.
