Morgan 5K Run/Walk
May 5, 2014
Morgan State University held their fourth annual 5k run and walk on May 3rd to raise money for students in the World Languages and International Studies program.
One hundred percent of the proceeds will go towards students who aspire to study abroad and learn about other parts of the world.
Dr. Elizabeth S. Gunn, Associate Professor of World Languages at Morgan and the event coordinator, says was pleased at the turnout.
“Every year more people are showing up to this event and that is a good thing. The more people there are, the more money can be raised to help send our students to different countries to study abroad,” said Gunn.
Participants had to pay a fee when to register. The price was $10 for Morgan students & K-12 students until April 19. For Morgan faculty, staff, and alumni it was $20 until April 19. For everyone who was not Morgan affiliated and for those who paid after that date, the fee was $25.
The event started on the walkway in front of the Morgan library. Participants traveled south through campus heading toward Lake Montebello, completed a lap around the lake and returned to campus to finish on the track in Hughes Memorial Stadium.
Michael Faulkner, 21, an Owing Mills native and first place winner, looked exhausted as he crossed the finish line with a time of 19 minutes and 21 seconds.
“I keep my body in top shape by running at least four times a week and I’ve prepared for this run for about a month and I knew it wouldn’t be easy,” said Faulkner.
If you could not make the race you were still able to make a donation, by registering on the event website. If you made a donation of $25 and above, then you were also eligible to receive a commemorative race shirt.
Immediately following the annual 5k Run and Walk event there was a Morgan Community Fun Day that included games, treats, and more for the Morgan community and for the people who participated in the run/walk.
