One of the most anticipated events of any HBCU homecoming is the homecoming concert. A showcase of the popular artists of the moment, homecoming concerts draw large crowds of students and non-students alike. Morgan’s homecoming concert lineup for 2013 promises not to disappoint, with the eclectic choices of K. Michelle, Migos, and J. Cole.
R&B songstress K. Michelle may be more known for her appearance in hit reality TV show “Love and Hip Hop,” but with her recent album “Rebellious Soul” she is increasing her profile musically. The first single from “Rebellious Soul,” “VSOP,” is one of the most popular R&B songs of the year and peaked at 33 on the billboard charts. With a new sound and her strong voice, K. Michelle is likely to have and incredible performance.
Migos is a rap group from Atlanta, consisting of members Quavo, Young Takeoff and Offset. Migos gained popularity in Atlanta with the song and video “Bando.” They continued to work on mixtapes and guest appearances and were recruited by Gucci Mane to join his 1017 Bricksquad label. Migos’ true big break came when Drake chose to remix their song “Versace,” creating a club smash that took over the summer. Migos’ wild energy, catchy hooks and quick flows are what make them distinctive as artists and performers.
J. Cole continues to reach new heights for his career in 2013. Having outsold Kanye West’s “Yeezus” with his sophomore album “Born Sinner” and his critical acclaim to commercial success this summer, he is looking to take over hip-hop. He’s come a long way from his early mixtape days. Part of Jay Z’s Roc Nation label, North Carolina native J. Cole was discovered during his college years at St. John’s University in New York. Since being signed J. Cole has continued to write and produce his own music as well as for other artists. J. Cole’s honest lyrics and relatable songs will definitely be a highlight of this year’s homecoming .
