Following Morgan State’s 33-14 loss to North Carolina Central at Hughes Stadium Saturday, Treyvon Branch laid his jersey with number 72 on the turf along with a nameplate to mark the end of his football career.
And as he watched his son shed tears, Darryl Branch gave Treyvon room and reflected on the journey.
‘’He was a little kid and became a high school guy,” said Darryl Branch. “Then he went to college and finished here. It was a very fun journey and a rollercoaster ride.’’
Treyvon Branch, a 6-foot, 3-inch offensive lineman was among the 17 seniors or graduate students on the roster that were honored as the season came to a close.
Branch, who was born on Sept. 11, 2001, is a native of White Plains, Maryland. He saluted Morgan for giving him a chance to stay in the area.
‘’They (the Morgan coaches) gave me a scholarship to come here,” said Branch, a preseason All-MEAC second team selection. “It was close to home and it was important for my family to come and see me.’’
Daniel Casillas, Jr., a teammate of Branch’s and fellow lineman, praised his friend.
‘’He’s a great guy,” said Casillas Jr., a senior and native of Kissimmee, Florida. “He never complains and always works hard. You know what you’re going to get from him and he’s someone I want to be like in the future.’’
N.C. Central’s Refeno Vangates caught a touchdown pass and returned a kick for a score in the Eagles’ win.
Morgan redshirt quarterback Raymond Moore III accounted for both scores for Morgan State (4-8, 1-4 in the MEAC), throwing a 30-yard touchdown pass to Justin Perry, and keeping another on the ground. He was 12-of-21 passing for 111 yards with two interceptions and led the team with 53 rushing yards.
The Eagles (8-4, 3-2 in the MEAC) took a 13-0 lead in the first quarter and never trailed.
