Morgan State’s Women’s Basketball team is currently sitting at a 3-3 record after facing cross-town rival Towson University and University of Maryland Baltimore County last week.
Even though Morgan won the first game of this past week, the Bears still struggled to find a rhythm throughout the game as they just could not keep a lead over the Tigers.
Head Coach Ed Davis said, “We had a lot of unforced turnovers. This is too high for a team that we coach and it’s basically because we have more people”
Winning 64-63, the Tigers and Bears stayed neck in neck the entire game as neither team could scratch out a sustained lead. Morgan had 25 turnovers by the end of the night.
With 4:08 minutes left in the 4th the Lady Bears had the opportunity to take the game and run with it, holding the biggest lead of the night. Morgan quickly lost it as Towson went on a 9-1 run.
Towson graduate forward Deja Bristol connected her free throw making the game 60-58 with only 1:04 minutes left.
The arena filled with intensity as the Bears fought to stay ahead. With 30 seconds on the clock the Tigers Junior guard Semaya Turner scored on a fastbreak making the score 61-60.
Juniors Jael Butler and Ja’la Bannerman shared the spot for most points scored both ending the night with 13 points. Butler also earned a total of 7 rebounds.
“Me personally I love contact so the more it is the better for me. The more they work the harder I work too,” Butler said “Whoever was down there I tried my best to put my body on them and vice versa.”
With the clock counting down the Bears continued to lead, cashing in on three more free throws. The Bears looked to be in control until Towson’s freshman guard Shariah Bynes scored a halfcourt three making it a one point game with one second left.
After forcing a turnover on the Morgan inbound, Tigers graduate student Jordan Wakefield missed the go-ahead layup making Morgan the winner in a nail-biting race.
“Our preparation had to be to finish games in the fourth quarter,” said Coach Davis.” As you can see, we got a little rattled in the fourth.”
Morgan split last week’s games losing to UMBC on Sunday 81-72. Leila Fair led the team with 22 points and 8 rebounds giving her MEAC defensive player of the week.
After ending the first half up one the Bears were unable to replicate in the second half. UMBC kept the Bears at bay during the 4th quarter earning a 9 point lead and ultimately ending the game 81-71 with a loss for the Bears.
The Bears return to the court on Wednesday Nov. 20, 11 A.M. at Hill Field house where they will take on Washington Adventist University.
