Homecoming week returned to Morgan State University’s campus on Sept. 29 and began a week full of activities for students, guests and alums.
The week is packed with events from start to finish and kicked off with a Sunday church service and silent headphone party. There will be a series of events throughout the week and conclude with the Morgan State Alumni Association’s Memorial Service on Sunday, Oct. 6.
“I was more excited last year but that’s because I didn’t know what it looked like at Morgan,” sophomore psychology major Elasia Jackson said. “I am more excited about homecoming itself because there will be things to do … not necessarily because it’s Morgan State’s homecoming.”
Homecoming week includes more than a dozen events such as Skate Night & Laser Tag on Thursday, the homecoming gala and an Alumni brunch on Saturday, and more. Some events cater to the student body, some to university alums and others to various guests.
“So far, the events I’ve seen have been very interesting and are a great way to bring our community together,” freshman biology major Sahrya Brown said.
Unfortunate events during last year’s homecoming caused the entire campus to shut down and resulted in the canceled festivities.
“With everything that happened last year, I hope everything goes as planned and that Morgan improves security this year, especially since this is an open campus,” said sophomore psych major Sidney Edwards.
As Morgan State prepares for a vibrant homecoming week, student voices have reflected a mix of excitement and anticipation — some say they are wary of another crime and others say they’re hopeful of having a memorable celebration.
“It’s a time to have fun and meet new people,” said Sidney Edwards, a sophomore in psychology. “Homecoming for every HBCU is a big thing and I’m excited to finally have my own personal experience.”
This year’s homecoming concert features Sexxy Red and Cash Cobain as the headliners — a controversial choice according to several students.
“I wish they’d added at least one more artist,” sophomore psych major Elasia Jackson said. “That would have represented more people, and I feel like I could have more fun if it were someone else.”
