The Morgan State Lady Bears softball team get to a .500 record for the first time this season after sweeping Howard University during a three-game series in DC last weekend. The Lady Bears picked up their fourth Mid-eastern Athletic conference win defeating the Bison 8-6 Saturday afternoon.
In the series against the Bison, sophomore pitcher Stephanie Rundlett, was on the mound for the Lady Bears giving her a 4-6 pitching record.
Prior to the series against Howard, the Lady Bears’ first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opponent of the season came against Hampton University, a team that spoiled the Lady Bears hopes of its first-ever MEAC Northern Division Championship last season. Hampton swept the Lady Bears in a three-game series in the final week. The Lady Pirates would win the division title and the Lady Bears fell to third place.
But in this year’s contest, Hampton took two of three games against the Lady Bears. Morgan got in the win column in game two, beating the Lady Pirates 4-1.
Morgan would be off for two weeks as a tournament scheduled at Mount St. Mary’s was cancelled. The Lady Bears returned to action to split a competitive two-game home series against University of Missouri – Kansas (UMKC).
On the mound for the Lady Bears in the first game against UMKC was ace Amy Begg. Morgan defeated the Kangaroos 9-8 with the help of the Young sister’s, Damali had an RBI double to bring Jalian home to tied the game up at eight in the 8th inning. Junior third baseman Gabriella Gorosave had an RBI single to bring D. Young home for the game-winning run.
In game two, Rundlett was the Lady Bears starting pitcher. Morgan blew a 6-2 lead that was held in the 4th inning. UMKC scored five underanswered points to slip pass the Lady Bears 7-6.
The Lady Bears (13-13, 4-2) currently sit third in the MEAC northern division standings. Coach Larry Hineline and the Lady Bears team will face Cornell Wednesday in a double-header. The Lady Bears will travel to Norfolk, VA this weekend to take on the Norfolk State Spartans for their third MEAC series of the season.
