The first woman to hold the position of Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, will deliver the keynote address for Morgan State University’s 140th Spring Commencement Exercises.
Pelosi attended Trinity College located in Washington, D.C. She is a mother of five and a grandmother to nine children.
The Baltimore native currently serves as the Democratic Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives and her family history breed political leaders.
Pelosi’s father was the mayor of Baltimore for 12 years and her brother Thomas D’Alesandro III was mayor from 1967 to 1971.
According to biography.com, Pelosi was a vocal critic of George W. Bush’s stance on the war in Iraq, advocating for troops to be released.
She also partnered with President Barack Obama to assist middle class working families for better jobs, college education, clean energy and affordable healthcare.
In 2013, Pelosi was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, the same place where the American’s women’s rights movement began, but her efforts of to reform caused a lot of criticism from the GOP.
Pelosi remained Speaker of the House until John Boehner succeeded her in 2010.
Pelosi will address the graduates of the class of 2016 Saturday, May 21 in the Talmadge Hill Field House. The commencement will stream live on the MSU’s homepage www.morgan.edu.
