Morgan State’s men’s basketball team extended its winning streak to two games with a commanding 124-57 victory over the Cheyney University of Pennsylvania Wolves Wednesday evening.
Redshirt senior forward Will Thomas delivered a career-best performance, exploding for 32 points to lead the Bears to victory. Despite being without their leading scorer, graduate senior Wynston Tabbs, the Bears still managed to secure their highest-scoring total of the young season.
“Cheyney came in and gave us their best shot but tonight was about us getting better,” Kevin Broadus, Morgan men’s basketball head coach, said following the game.
The Bears displayed their best three-point shooting performance of the season, lighting it up from beyond the arc with 11 made threes on just 20 attempts.
Thomas shot a remarkable 80% from the field, and was flawless from beyond the arc, hitting all four of his three-point attempts.
“I’ve been working on the three ball a lot the last few months just trying to perfect that,” Thomas stated.
Junior guard Rob Lawson was crucial in this game, knocking down a career-high 4 three-pointers. He finished with 18 points, a season-high 6 assists, and a steal.
Points in the paint have been a consistent strength for the Bears this season, as they completely overwhelmed the Wolves in the paint by a 64-22 margin.
Coming off his best performance as a Bear on Sunday, senior forward Daniel Akitoby continued to impress with 11 points and 10 rebounds, recording his third double-double. Akitoby is also the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference leader in rebounds.
“He brings a rebounding dimension that we haven’t had in a long time and if just stays within himself he’s going to be good for us,” Broadus expressed.
The Bears capitalized in the transition game, scoring 29 points off turnovers and having a 41-11 advantage in fast-break points.
Junior guard Joshua Blackmon, the leading scorer for the Wolves finished the game with 13 points.
The Bears are preparing for their most challenging stretch of the season, over the next five games, four of them will take place away from home, before beginning their MEAC schedule on January 4.
“We’re fouling too much, a lot of those points they got were from the free throw line,” explained Broadus. “We had a lot of bright spots but still some things we got to tighten because now we go on the road for two big games against Bowling Green and Xavier.”
