Bears Basketball Preview

The Bears look to have a more successful season this year after returning from a 9-19 season last year. The men’s basketball team started their season off with an away game at The University of South Carolina on Nov. 10.

Along with the many different MEAC opponents, Morgan is hoping to compete against tougher teams and has added out-of-conference games against The University of South Carolina, Loyola Marymount University, Virginia Military Institute and others this season.

Although the team hasn’t won the MEAC since its back to back championships in 2009 and 2010 students still seem to have hope. Senior Elisha Hannibal had the most confidence in the 2010 team out of his 4 years but still believes in the Bears, “Hard work and consistency will lead to Morgan’s success and I expect the basketball team to excel and win the MEAC this year,”  said Hannibal.

Players such as senior DeWayne Jackson, senior Anthony Hubbard, junior Ian Chiles and junior Justin Black will bring some experience and leadership to the team. This year some pivotal additions will add variety to the roster.

Three new players signed national letters of intent. Donte Pretlow, a 6-foot, 185 pound guard from Baltimore, Cedric Blossom, a 6-6, 225 pound forward from Columbia, Md. and Daryl Traynham, 5-9, 180 pound point guard from Upper Marlboro, Md. These new additions are expected to aid the team heavily in the upcoming season.

Although last year’s record wasn’t that impressive, students still seem to have hope and confidence in the team.

“I didn’t really go to too many of the games last year but I think we have a really good team this year and I think that they have a strong chance at winning the conference,”  said student Will Ngakoue. Many here at Morgan State are looking forward to a promising season.
