With a host of props and sound effects, some of Morgan’s fraternities and sororities acted out various skits while performing their step routines at “The Hunger Games: Battle Ground Step Show” during I Love Morgan week.
“Victory is a beautiful thing,” said English major and Delta Sigma Theta sorority member Shaquayah McKenzie after her sorority’s performance. The Delta’s, along with Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, shared first place in the competition.
King Flexxa hosted the show, while DJ Flow played the music. A local elementary school’s step team opened the show and during intermission, an exhibition team of grade school girls performed. Both teams were dressed in army fatigue pants and black t-shirts. Although the elementary team was met with applause by the audience, the crowd was less enthusiastic after the exhibition team took the stage.
“The show was exciting, but I didn’t like the little kids,” said sophomore theatre major Aaron Miller. He was not the only one to think that as many people walked out during the exhibition team’s performance.
Second place went to Omega Psi Phi, who incorporated extra-terrestrials into their performance. Members of their teams dressed as green aliens, with one member resembling the rapper, Trinidad James. The Kappa’s, on the other hand, centered their skit around the movie “Blood Diamond.”
“They came up with things I never thought about,” said junior information systems major William Ngakoue. “I liked the props, music selection and sound effects.”
The Delta’s and Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) went head to head as they were the only sororities participating in the show. As the AKA’s stepped, Beyoncé’s “Bow Down” blasted. The Delta’s however, did a mob inspired routine.
