After the noticeable increase of violent crime in the Northwood Shopping Center, the Morgan State University Police Department urges students, faculty and staff to stay away from the BP gas station until improvements are made in the security.

In an email sent to the university on Sunday, the MSUPD warned the Morgan community to be aware of their surroundings during travel to and from campus, especially for those who live in the Marble Hall Gardens Apartments.

The security notice comes hours after a report of the second off-campus shooting at the BP gas station in three days in Northwood Sunday afternoon, as the victim was shot exiting the gas station. The first incident occurred early Friday morning where another victim was grazed. Both shootings were non-fatal.

In the meantime while waiting for security improvements, MSUPD will assign a security guard to escort those traveling in between Marble Hall Gardens and the Earl G. Graves School of Business & Management.

“Additionally, beginning tonight at 11:00 p.m., we are assigning an additional security guard to personally provide safety escorts between Marble Hall Gardens and the Earl Graves Business School building,” said Adrian Wiggins, executive director of campus and public safety. “We implore students living in Marble Hall Gardens to make use of this service.”

The university encourages students, faculty and staff to use MSUPD’s security escort service by calling 443-885-3103 and requesting an escort.
