The Morgan State Lady Bears won their first round matchup against the North Carolina Central Lady Eagles, 52-42, on Monday afternoon to kick off the MEAC Tournament.
Sophomore guard Zuri White recorded a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 14 rebounds to lead the way for Morgan. The Lady Bears out-rebounded NCCU, 45-38, with 21 of those coming on the offensive end.
Morgan’s defense was the difference in the game, holding the Lady Eagles to a 35.6 percent shooting performance. They also forced 16 turnovers, five more than they committed. Their defense helped them to overcome an underwhelming shooting performance in which they shot just 29 percent from the floor.
The fifth-seeded Lady Bears’ record improves to 13-16. They face their next opponent, cross-town rival Coppin State University, on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
