Morgan State University has hired former Virginia State head coach Nadine Domond as the new head coach of the women’s basketball team.
The university made this announcement via an email from the athletic department this morning.
Domond is fresh from VSU after a 23-7 season, with three All-CIAA honorees, a Division II NCAA tournament bid and winning CIAA coach of the year. She spent three years at VSU finishing her time in Ettrick with a 52-28 overall record.
Bears’ women’s basketball finished its latest season 13-17 with the now retired Ed Davis Jr.
Domond comes to Morgan State after the team lost six players total to injury or the NCAA transfer portal.
Recently departed players include the team’s leading scorer junior forward Naya Ojukwu, sophomore guard Tamaria Rumph, freshman forward Nia Green, seniors forward Laila Fair, guard Emily Jones and guard Nakilah Johnson.
Prior to coaching at Virginia State, Domond was the head coach at Grambling State for two years, where she became SWAC head coach in her second year before resigning.
Domond was a high-level player before coaching and played college ball at Iowa under coach C. Vivian Stringer.
From Iowa, she went 19 overall in the 1998 WNBA draft to New York Liberty and played basketball in France, Poland and Israel.
Domond’s hiring at Morgan is also her return to the MEAC, where she began her coaching career as a graduated assistant at Hampton University in 2002.
Domond will also be the first woman to coach the women’s team in over 20 years.
