Although campus was less crowded since the conclusion of the spring semester, Morgan State University remained in motion.
As students prepare to walk the brick-paved walkways of Morgan State’s campus for the 2023-2024 academic school year, here is a recap of some events you may have missed during the summer vacation:
Student Housing Crisis Lingers
As Morgan prepares for a record enrollment of close to 10,000, the university’s housing crisis still remains a top issue for students. A total of 1,919 on-campus beds are reserved for mostly freshman students. Off-campus housing options, such as Morgan View, Marble Hall Gardens, HH Midtown, Towson Town Place, Altus, and the Lord Baltimore Hotel make up for 3,220 upperclassmen students.
While university President Wilson attempted to reassure critics with construction updates for Thurgood Marshall Hall’s second tower, the student body remains skeptical of where about 10,000 students will reside.
Construction Continues on Campus
On campus it is apparent that the university is going through a few changes. In the academic quad, the university’s system is being removed to eventually be replaced with a new one.
Meanwhile, two of Morgan’s on-campus residence halls–Cummings Hall and Baldwin House–are being renovated for this school year. In addition to the current construction, the university is also in the process of putting up the new Public Health and Human Services building, along with a new dormitory.
Bears Travel Abroad
The Morgan State Men’s basketball team took their dribbling talents abroad in August. As part of their Belgium-France tour, the team participated in four exhibition matches.
The squad dominated on the court with wins in all four of their matches. With only four returning players from last year’s roster, the Bears’ chemistry is on point ahead of the upcoming season.
Northwood Commons Continues to Expand
The Northwood Commons shopping center is growing as several businesses opened during the summer break. Sunny’s Subs and Georgia Peach bring cravings to the 100,000 square-foot lot. Shoppers can anticipate the opening of additional establishments, including ZIPS Cleaners, Jersey Mike’s Subs, Pizza Hut, Slutty Vegan, Miss Toya’s and Barnes and Noble Booksellers (where Morgan’s current bookstore will relocate to).
Since its creation in 1948, Northwood has evolved into a symbol of Morgan pride and Black entrepreneurial success with the feature of several alumni-owned businesses.
