Pre-election day rally emphasizes the importance of voting
October 28, 2018
Morgan State University held a pre-election day rally Saturday at the University’s Fine Arts Center to encourage students to vote.
The event partnered with Young Gets It Done and was presented by 1199 SEIU. Also, sponsored by organizations such as BlackGirlsVote, Planned Parenthood, The Keenan System and The Collective Pac.
The rally was announced just this week as a surprise from the university with the intentions of driving the Morgan community to vote in the midterm elections.
Although millennials have proved to have the lowest voter turnout in four decades, millennials also have the opportunity to shift the momentum within the current state of politics.
Hosted by Morgan Alum DJ Flow, Revolt TV’s Scottie Beam, and BET’s Gia Peppers to help promote “the importance of using our voices when it comes to voting.”
With performances by Dave East, G Herbo, Shiggy, Bri Steves, LGP Qua, Presidential Davo, along with unannounced guests Young Moose and local chef duo Nacho Bangers.
Philadelphia native and motivational speaker, Wallo267, spoke about the impact the event would have on campus.
“I feel like it’s going to open students up to voting and make them look more into it,” said Wallo.
After the performances, the hosts informed students about shuttles that provided transportation from the event to the nearest polling place.
Scottie Beam also offered words of encouragement to students and urged them to vote.
“We should be holding more pep rallies like this so that people can inform themselves,” said Scottie Beam. “We need to put people in these seats, so they can speak for us, this should be the topic of every conversation until the election is over.”
Early voting in Maryland is taking place now through Thursday, November 1, from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. While the general election will begin November 6.
