The athletic department announced that the softball and tennis teams are now eligible for postseason play.

They were still facing a ban due to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) violations, announced in December. Originally all of Morgan State University’s athletic teams were facing the ban, but after an appeal, it was reduced to three.

The football, softball, and tennis teams, were still facing penalties and fines. After talking with the teams, the athletic department decided that the tennis and softball programs would appeal the decision further and won, allowing them to participate in this year’s postseason.

All of them are having successful seasons. The softball team is in first place in their division and have won 11 games in a row. The men’s tennis team is also on a winning streak of eleven and are undefeated in conference play. The women’s tennis team is in second place in their division with a record of 5-1.

“It would mean everything,” said senior Anissa Morales on the chance to win the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship, “to end it here, with this specific team we have going this season, to get a ring would be perfect.”

The football team will still face the penalties that were imposed by the NCAA.

“We made a decision not to appeal football,” said Morgan athletic director Ed Scott. “Primarily, the reason is because the number of violations from football were so large that I don’t think from a credibility standpoint it would really help us at all. It could hurt us in the future with the NCAA.”

The NCAA sanctions are still something that the program will still have to face down the road. They are on a four-year probation period and have to make sure that from here on that the issues of the past will no longer be a problem.
