Washington D.C’s public school system and Howard University are teaming up to give high school students college experience.  The city’s schools chancellor Kaya Henderson and Howard president Dr. Wayne A.I. Frederick recently met with Mayor Muriel Bower to map out the details. Studies have shown that students with college level experience are more prone to having a successful college experience. Mayor Bowser says that the program will “accelerate their path to the college and career of their dreams.”

This fall, 12th grade students from Banneker and McKinley Technology High Schools will be able to enroll in up to two college courses per semester at Howard, earning both high school and college credits free of charge. Students with a minimum 3.0 GPA must submit a personal essay and letters of recommendation. Henderson believes that through this process, students will gain “focus, confidence, and foundation” needed to be successful. (Afro)
