On March 14, 2014 at 8 p.m. “The KLE-TEAM Presents A Classic R&B Night” featuring R&B sensation Kelly Price and Bad Boy sensations 112 performed at Morgan State University for a night of R&B music representing the 90s, early 2000s and the modern era.
African-American comedians by the names of Kleon, Nick & Dink hosted the show.
R&B sensation Kelly Price came out on stage singing many of her hits such as “As we lay,” “Not your Daddy” featuring Stokley of the Great R&B group Mint Condition and “Friend of Mine” with R&B Legends Ronald Isley and R. Kelly.
Price sang “As we lay” while focusing on the essence the song and what it brought to the older generation that was in their great youth during her prime as a singer. She begins the song “Not your daddy” talking about how much she loves the group Mint Condition and what this musical collaboration meant to her during the years of 2008-2011 in R&B music. She sings the song “Not your daddy” emphasizing the seductiveness of the song’s message reminding people of their roles in romantic relationships. Lastly, the greatest highlight of her performance of the evening was when she performed her greatest hit “Friend of Mine” where she sang her part of the song but had the audience and her background singers sing and replicate the parts of the song where both Ronald Isley and R. Kelly speak and sing throughout this classic number in Price’s career.
In the middle of Price’s performance, she shouts out Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. where she is a proud honorary member of the great Divine Nine Organization. Price goes on share her past as a songwriter for many R&B and Hip-Hop greats before she became signed and recognized as an R&B singer coming up in the music industry.
Price tells the audience how she was once told “fat girls don’t sell R&B…only sell house music or gospel.” Throughout her entire career, she has struggled with some self-esteem issues because she has been a full-figured woman her whole life. As a result, she has lost a lot of weight over the two decades of her music career as an R&B singer. She proudly explains to the audience that not only has not letting criticism get to her, she was able to succeed and stay relevant to the R&B game “seventeen years later” as an R&B singer.
Price described her life, love, friendship and musical honors to be around the Late R&B Goddess Whitney Houston then proceeds to sing their single “Heartbreak Hotel” with fellow R&B Diva Sensation and Bad Boy Label-mate Faith Evans. After singing “Heartbreak Hotel” Price begins talking about back when an R&B group was just getting signed by P. Diddy.
For the last act of the evening, Bad Boy Sensations 112 hit the stage with their sexy number “Anywhere” where one member of the R&B group removed his shirt and proceeds to sing along with the rest of his band mates on stage. Before the group could continue to sing the rest of their hits, they took a moment to reminisce on the life of the Hip-Hop Legend Notorious B.I.G. 112 continued their performance with the classic smooth groove hit “Sky is the Limit.”
The R&B group 112 and R&B Diva Sensation Kelly Price took the time out to acknowledge the rapper’s classics: “Juicy,” “One More Chance,” “Hypnotize,” “All about the Benjamin’s” and “Mo’ Money Mo’ Problems.” R&B singer Faith Evans performed classic song “Feel so Good.”
R&B group 112 ended their performance by singing all of their hits “Cupid,” “You already Know” “Peaches and Cream,” “Dance with Me,” “It’s Over Now” and many more during the concert.
Finally, the concert ended with the classic edgy groove “Missing you” by P. Diddy, Lil Cease, Notorious B.I.G. and R&B singer Faith Evans serving as the final tribute to the Hip-Hop Legend Notorious B.I.G. where the majority of the Bad Boy Hip-Hop label performed. Despite the lack of promotion, a great number of people from both Morgan State and outside of the University attended this event.
