One of the infamous “Divine 9” fraternities at Morgan State University is put under investigation after allegedly rejecting a student membership because of his sexual orientation.

Brian Stewart, a former White House intern, appeared to be one that a fraternity typically looks for- the model scholar. He had long dreamed of becoming a member of the university’s Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. His mentor and pastor, who are both members of the organization, had a major influence on his desire to join the fraternity.

After his interview with Alpha Iota, Morgan State University’s chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, Stewart received his rejection letter. Not long after his denial, he received a series of messages which included gay slurs exchanged between members of the fraternity regarding his application. Stewart says the messages are pertained to him and believes his sexual orientation is the real reason behind the decline of membership.

“I didn’t know I was going to have no control…that my interview meant nothing, my achievements meant nothing, because they had already made up their minds,” says Stewart.  However, there was one member who reportedly stated that members of the fraternity should “give him the perception of a fair and equal opportunity” in terms of his rejection. Members of the fraternity have not responded to any requests of comment. “I couldn’t even be angry because I was so hurt,” Stewart says.

The university opened an investigation into Stewart’s allegation after he filed a formal complaint prior. Morgan State spokesman, Jarrett Carter Sr., says “The university doesn’t tolerate or accept any kind of discrimination…it’s something that the university takes very very seriously.” Carter also says that those found in violation can face disciplinary action after a review by a panel of students, faculty and staff.

Brian Stewart claims to no longer be interested in being a member of the fraternity and reportedly filed the complaint against the organization in order to raise awareness.
