Morgan State running back Jason Collins Jr. will miss Saturday’s game against Georgetown with an ankle injury, head coach Damon Wilson confirmed.
Collins Jr., the Bears’ leading rusher, has totaled 322 yards on 82 carries with five touchdowns this season. He suffered an ankle sprain early in the first quarter of last week’s Circle City Classic against Miles College.
Despite his absence, Morgan State finished with 253 rushing yards in the win.
“I want to come back for homecoming,” Collins Jr. said. “But for sure I’m coming back [against] Howard. I [want to] get everything right with my body so I can be hitting on all cylinders [at] 100 percent.”
Redshirt freshman Randall Nauden led the ground game last week with 75 rushing yards, while backup quarterback Raymond Moore III added 83 yards and a touchdown.
“We got a couple of other guys that can run the ball as well,” Wilson said. “So as long as we do what we need to do upfront, we give ourselves a chance to be successful.”
The Bears have leaned heavily on their rushing attack this year, attempting 73 more runs than passes.
Morgan State has faced uncertainty at quarterback, too.
Starter Kobe Muasau exited last week’s game in the first quarter after taking a hard hit. Moore came in and completed 8 of 21 passes for 63 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
Wilson confirmed Muasau will remain the starter this week. Through five games, Muasau holds a 120.46 passer rating with a 64.7 percent completion rate, two touchdowns and three interceptions.
“I’ve got to pick it up,” Muasau said. “I’ve been playing down to a level that I shouldn’t be playing to… so going into this week my mindset is just trying to be disciplined, getting good mental reps and being sharp with everything I do.”
The Bears face Georgetown on the road Saturday at 1 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
