Morgan State University will close campus earlier than usual for Homecoming this year as part of heightened security measures, the university announced in an email to the community.
According to the message from President David Wilson, all on-campus, Homecoming Day activities must end by 5 p.m. on Oct. 11.
After that time, only residential students and pre-approved personnel will be allowed on campus.
Academic buildings, offices and service spaces will close at 3 p.m., and amplified sound, including music, must stop by 5 p.m.
The early closure marks a major change from last year, when Morgan’s Homecoming security plan allowed campus activities into the evening. The decision follows consecutive shootings tied to the university’s celebrations.
In 2023, five people were injured in a shooting on campus during Homecoming week, the third straight year of gun violence linked to the festivities.
In 2024, another shooting occurred near campus on Argonne Drive just after the football game.
Wilson said the 2025 measures aim to prioritize safety while preserving the spirit of Homecoming, which includes a full week of events such as the parade, concerts and the football game.
New additions this year include a Homecoming kickoff at Live Casino on Oct. 9, giving alumni, students and guests an off-campus option to celebrate.
“Protecting the well-being of our students, alumni, faculty, staff and guests is, and must always be, our top priority,” Wilson wrote.
