After a tough 60-0 loss to Toledo, Morgan State football team looks to secure its first win of the season against Central State on Saturday in the Bears’ second home game at Hughes Stadium.
A win would mark Morgan’s first non-conference victory since a 41-0 homecoming rout of Lincoln University on Oct. 5, 2024.
The Bears (0-3) have dropped their first three games to South Alabama (21-38), Towson (22-27) and Toledo (0-60).
Through those games, the Bears have committed eight turnovers and allowed an average of 41.7 points per game. Despite the non-ideal start, the Bears are still optimistic about the season ahead.
“The first three games are probably going to be the toughest on the schedule,” said linebacker Erick Hunter. “We already knew, we called it the death row lineup… [those were] tough games.”
Morgan and Central State haven’t met since 1996. The Marauders (0-3), a Division II program in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), are also searching for their first win after being held scoreless in back-to-back losses to Benedict College (0-10) and Tuskegee University (0-33).
They currently sit in last place in the SIAC standings.
Meanwhile, the Bears have yet to see a conference opponent and have totaled 799 offensive yards this season. Running back Jason Collins Jr. leads the way with 263 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Head coach Damon Wilson said the team will rely on “veteran leadership” and fan support to “stay in good-spirits and be ready to play.”
“The first quarter [of the season] we didn’t come out like we wanted to,” said Wilson. “We have an opportunity to start the second quarter of a season, and we’re looking forward to getting on a good start.”
Hunter and redshirt sophomore defensive back Hiroshi Carr echoed that optimism, saying the Bears are ready to put early mistakes behind them and “light the scoreboard up on Saturday.”
Kickoff against Central State is scheduled for noon Saturday at Hughes Stadium. The game will stream on ESPN+.
