Through its first two games, the Morgan State football team has held its own statistically and even come out ahead in some offensive categories, despite losses in both contests.
However, the Bears have a lead in one category – turnovers – that they’d rather not have. As they prepare for Saturday’s road contest with Toledo, holding onto the ball is at a premium.
“(We have to) Make sure we don’t make…self-inflicting mistakes,” said running back Jason Collins Jr. “I feel like no one is unbeatable and as long as we do everything the correct way, that it’s supposed to be done, we should have a chance of winning.”
Collins Jr., the team’s leading rusher and quarterback Kobe Muasau accounted for the Bears’ seven turnovers in their losses to South Alabama and Towson.
The Bears’ face Toledo at 3:30 p.m. Saturday (ESPN+) in their second Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponent of the season.
During their first FBS matchup against South Alabama, the Jaguars were able to produce 17 points off the Bears’ four turnovers.
Last week against Towson, the Bears outperformed the Tigers in every offensive stat, but three turnovers in the red zone and a last minute Towson touchdown were critical factors.
Head coach Damon Wilson said no key offensive changes will be made, despite the number of turnovers throughout the first two games.
“We executed at a high level, pass and run… so we’re going to emphasize this week again; ball security drills, making good decisions and then we’ll go from there,” said Wilson.
So far this season Muasau has a 62 percent completion rate with 370 yards and one touchdown pass while Collins Jr. has 260 total yards – rushing and receiving – and four touchdowns.
The Rockets (1-1) enter Saturday’s Glass Bowl Stadium meeting coming off a season opening 24-16 loss to Kentucky and last week’s 45-21 home win over Western Kentucky.
