Morgan State University softball head coach Larry Hineline, the most successful coach in the program’s history, has stepped away from the program after 11 years, according to a statement posted Tuesday on the university’s athletics website.
“We are grateful for Coach Hineline’s dedication and leadership during his time with our program,” athletic director Dena Freeman-Patton said in the release. “His commitment to academic excellence and competitive success will leave a lasting impact at Morgan. We wish Coach Hineline the very best in his future endeavors.”
Hineline became the program’s fourth head coach in 2015 and led the Bears to four consecutive MEAC regular season titles and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2021 and 2024.
“After 11 incredible years leading this program, I’ve decided to step down as head coach,” Hineline said in the statement. “I’m deeply grateful for the student-athletes, staff and supporters who have made this journey so meaningful. It’s been an honor to be a Bear and to help shape the lives of so many young women and establish a championship environment at Morgan State.”
Hineline closes out his Morgan State career with a 225-205 overall record (.523), and a 129-73 conference mark (.638), as well as two MEAC Coach of the Year awards. Under his leadership, Bears student-athletes earned 39 all-conference selections, eight major individual awards and numerous academic honors.
His time at Morgan also included a 2023 NCAA investigation that resulted in the program being placed on probation and receiving other penalties following violations related to impermissible tryouts.
Before joining Morgan, Hineline served as head coach at Coppin State University.
Morgan has launched a search to select the program’s next head coach.
