Morgan State University is hosting the 56th annual Liberian Studies Association (LSA) Conference through Saturday.
Scholars, civil society leaders and private sector stakeholders have been invited to attend the gathering, to discuss equity, inclusion, gender and development in Liberia and other African countries.
According to organizers, the conference, which began Thursday, serves as a platform to exchange ideas, share experiences and collaborate on strategies to promote a sustainable future for Liberia. The conference’s theme is to advance progress in Liberia while engaging in broader conversations relevant to the African continent.
Founded as a nonprofit scholarly organization, the LSA promotes academic collaboration among those engaged in research on Liberia across a range of disciplines. The association’s mission focuses on both the pursuit of academic inquiry and contributions to the development of Liberia and its people.
“To the question why study Liberia, or why a forum devoted to the study of Liberia,” said D. Elwood Dunn, a Liberian scholar and former president of the LSA. “The answer inevitably is two-fold: one, to serve the end of disinterested pursuit and advancement of knowledge, and two, to serve the end of development of the nation and people of Liberia.”

Full-day panel sessions are scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Martin D. Jenkins Hall, Behavioral and Social Sciences Center, Room 512. Saturday’s program will also include a keynote address and a closing dinner.
Al-Hassan Conteh, Liberia’s ambassador to the United States, is expected to attend the conference. The newly minted ambassador presented his credentials to the acting chief of protocol of the United States earlier this week and is expected to formally present his credentials to President Donald Trump soon.
Students, faculty and community members are invited to attend and engage with scholars and professionals whose work highlights Liberia’s history, politics and future within a global context.
