As the class is back in session the Morgan State University Wrestling team remained in action over the winter break. Morgan is now 4-11 in their second year bringin wrestling back.
The Bears have now doubled their wins since year one after getting their first division one win at Davidson 26-13 on Jan. 17 and beating Johns Hopkins 37-12 on Jan.19.
‘’It feels better than last year but we still have a lot of work to do. We are coming off a good win against Davidson.’’ said head coach Kenny Monday.
The Bears are led by junior heavyweight Xavier Doolin who has a 10-6 record, 174 pounders redshirt senior Darrien Roberts and sophomore Cort Vann who are 6-3 and 7-8 respectively.
Coach Monday opened up about the preparation for the midpoint of the season. The Bears are also going through an injury-bug as four of its five starters on the team are out.
‘’A lot of our guys are unhealthy so we need to work to get them back on the lineup.’’ said Monday, ‘’We just have to get ourselves out of this hump.’’
Morgan is still trying to earn its first conference win of the season. 0-3 in the EIWA [Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association], they are hoping to end that skid with three more conference matches before tournament time.
‘’It takes work and focus. It’s always hard to come back from winter break and get adjusted. So we need to just keep working and building towards the match.’’ said Monday
The Bears highest rated wrestler according to wrestlestat.com is Doolin at 285 pounds. Despite his success this year he is still optimistic about the growth and development of his teammates.
‘’There are a lot of young guys on the roster so we’re still learning . We just have to keep fighting for all these teams and not give up. Stay positive and celebrate the small victories. Something that should be used in an everyday aspect in your life.’’ said Doolin
The Bears hit the mats once again tomorrow Friday Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. in Hurts Gymnasium.
