Morgan State University’s Wrestling team remained active over the winter break.
Bears’ wresting is 4-11 this season — double what they achieved last season. The team achieved its first division 1 win at Davidson College and won 26-13 on Jan. 17; they went on to beat Johns Hopkins 37-12 on Jan. 19.
“It feels better than last year but we still have a lot of work to do. We are coming off a good win against Davidson.’’ said head coach Kenny Monday.
Junior heavyweight Xavier Doolin (10-6 ), 174-pound redshirt senior Darrien Roberts (6-3) and sophomore Cort Vann (7-8) lead the Bears this year. However, the Bears are going through an injury bug as four of its five starters are out.
“A lot of our guys are unhealthy so we need to work to get them back on the lineup.’’ said Monday, ‘’We just have to get ourselves out of this hump.’’
Morgan has gone 0-3 in conference and looks to earn its first win during the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA). The goal is to end that skid with three more conference matches before tournament time.
“It takes work and focus. It’s always hard to come back from winter break and get adjusted. So we need to just keep working and building towards the match.’’ said Monday.
According to wrestlestat.com, the Bears highest-rated wrestler is Doolin at 285 pounds.
“There are a lot of young guys on the roster so we’re still learning ,” said Doolin. “We just have to keep fighting for all these teams and not give up. Stay positive and celebrate the small victories. Something that should be used in an everyday aspect in your life.’’ said Doolin
The Bears hit the mats Friday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. in Hurts Gymnasium.
