The Morgan State University men’s basketball team defeated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks 70-65, extending the Bears’ win streak to three games.
The Bears trailed by 12 points with less than 17 minutes to go in the game — but went on a 19-6 run to take an insurmountable lead with eight minutes remaining.
Senior guard Wynston Tabbs scored 11 of his team high, 14 points, in the second half to lead the charge.
“When we play team basketball, it’s hard to beat us,” Bears head coach Kevin Broadus said. “When we play [as] individuals and guys just want to take their shot, my shot — we’re easy to beat. I’m just glad the guys snapped out of it and played team basketball offensively.”
The Bears stepped up the intensity of their defense in the second half and held the Hawks scoreless for nearly five minutes.
“Now, the results are changing because defense is fun for us and now everybody is picking each other up,” Broadus said. “It used to be a burden for us early in the season and that is why the results were the way they were.”
The Bears had a total of 40 rebounds, seven steals, two blocks, scored 10 points from turnovers alone and finished the game with a total of 11 assists — five of them coming from junior guard Kamron Hobbs.
“Assists are really my teammates doing their jobs. I’m just getting them in the right spots,” Hobbs said. “If they don’t make their shots, I am not getting the assist. So it’s really just my teammates getting in the gym and them making their shots. I just got to give credit to them.”
Hobbs scored 11 points, grabbed five rebounds and shot 100% from the free-throw line.
Hobbs and Tabbs were not alone in supporting the Bears offense and defense. Junior forward Allen Udemadu attacked the paint and scored eight points, grabbed four rebounds, blocked one shot and shot 100% from the free-throw line.
“We know what we have now, nobody in this league can stop him. He’s gotta understand to read the defense,” Broadus said.
Once the Bears had a lead of 47-46, they maintained it for the rest of the game and won.
The Bears are scheduled to play the Delaware State University Hornets at Memorial Hall in Dover, Delaware, Monday at 7:30 p.m.
