Morgan State University’s men’s basketball team is seeking to defeat the Howard University Bison for a second season. The last time the two teams competed against each other, the Bears beat the Bison 89-76 at the Hill Field House on Feb. 20, 2023.
Junior forward Will Thomas proclaimed that the team’s upcoming game is personal because the Bison are the reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) tournament champs. He’s confident in this weekend’s outcome, as four out of the five wins in the Bears’ overall record (5-14) have been at home.
“Playing at home is an advantage for us because we have a good fan base and support,” he said.
This season, the Bears have less turnovers than the Bison, their current number being 284. The Bison currently hold 317.
The Bears are currently coming off a victorious 89-86 conference game win against the Coppin State Eagles, whom they played on Jan. 20.
“One game at a time, it’s a good start,” Bears head coach Kevin Broadus said when asked if the win has given the team momentum. “I hope that is the first [win] of many.”
Though things are looking up for now, Broadus makes a point to ensure the team remains humble.
“We’re feeling good about our previous win, but our coach always tells us don’t get too high and don’t get too low,” junior guard Kamron Hobbs said. “So we’re in good spirits but we’re ready to prove ourselves again because that’s what it feels like we’ve got to do every practice.”
Hobbs believes that the Bears are a top two team in the MEAC, and they may have what it takes to win the conference this year. According to his teammate Thomas, the Bears have been studying basketball films and intensifying their practices to better their odds this weekend.
The Bears are scheduled to play the Bison at Morgan State’s Hill Field House on Jan. 27 at 4:30 p.m. in a “White Out” game. The university is encouraging all attendees to wear white.
