Morgan State University’s men basketball team is pursuing their first win in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference this year. Currently, the Bears hold a record of 0-2 in conference games, with an overall record of 4-14.
This season, all of the Bears’ games are part of the conference.
Kevin Broadus, Bears head basketball coach, emphasized that the rest of the Bears’ schedule is going to be challenging.
“We’re just getting ready for a tough road,” Broadus said. “When the dust settles, we just hope to be at the top with the rest of the guys.”
According to MEAC sports, the men’s basketball tournament is a conference championship tournament in the MEAC and has been held every year since 1972.
The winner of the MEAC tournament gets the opportunity to participate in the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament. Every team in the MEAC makes the conference tournament, however the one-through-eight seed is determined by conference wins during the regular season.
Junior guard Kamron Hobbs understands the magnitude of winning these upcoming games. He’s determined to make sure his team is prepared.
“Everything is intensified. Every run, run harder. If you’re in the gym shooting for an hour, turn it up to an hour-thirty to two hours,” Hobbs said. “The preparation has to be intensified, you have to do something different if you want change.”
Hobbs emphasized that the team does not need to just be doing layups for warm-ups.
“Just because we are doing layups doesn’t mean we need to just be doing layups,” Hobbs said. “We need to throw good passes to our teammates in the warm-up line.”
According to Hobbs, Broadus mentioned that the team needs to take the season one game at a time and not peek ahead at the schedule.
The Bears are scheduled to play the Coppin State Eagles at the Physical Education Complex on Jan. 20 at 4 p.m.
