The Morgan State Bears defeated the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Retrievers 92-80 on Wednesday, ending the Bears’ seven-game losing streak.
The Bears picked up the pace in the second half after taking a five-point lead at halftime. They caught fire and never looked back, outscoring the Retrievers 51-44 during the final stretch of the game.
Wynston Tabbs, Bears redshirt senior guard, led the team points, scoring a season-high 38 points in the win. He shot 13 for 21 (61 percent) inside the paint and 6 for 10 (60 percent) from beyond the arc.
Tabbs was not the only one who had a solid night scoring. Will Thomas, Bears redshirt junior forward, also finished with a season-high 23 points packed with four assists, two steals and two blocks.
The Bears stepped it up defensively this time around. The team stole the ball eight times total, out-rebounded the Retrievers 41-39 and scored 16 points from turnovers.
In the first half, both teams were exchanging blow for blow, tied 30-30 with just under six minutes left.
This was when Kamron Hobbs, Bears redshirt junior guard, broke ice with a three-point that gave the Bears the lead back.
The Bears would maintain the lead for the rest of the game and go 31 for 68 (45 percent) from the field, 8 for 19 (42 percent) from three and 22 for 26 (85 percent) from the free throw line.
The team will play their next game at home against Virginia University of Lynchburg on Saturday, at noon.
