Police have arrested a second suspect in connection to the Oct. 3 shooting at Morgan State University according to a campus-wide announcement from university President David Wilson late Monday afternoon.
In this announcement, Wilson detailed how the Baltimore Police Department’s Warrant Apprehension Task Force, U.S. Marshals and Metropolitan Police arrested Jovon Williams, 18, in Washington, D.C., last weekend. Williams now awaits extradition to Baltimore to answer for his alleged crimes in October.
Wilson recognized and thanked the police departments who investigated and brought Williams and his alleged accomplice, 17, who remains unnamed because he is underage, to justice.
“The safety of our community remains paramount,” said Wilson. “Hopefully, this news will lessen any potential fears or anxieties that may persist…please take solace in knowing that we will not let up our focus on improving and expanding security on and off this campus.”
Both Williams and his teenage associate are suspects in the mass shooting that took place on Morgan’s campus during the university’s Homecoming festivities. Five people were injured during the shooting–four of which were Morgan students.
In the ensuing hours, university administration canceled or postponed the remaining Homecoming activities and canceled classes for the rest of the week–the first time in the university’s 156-year history.
Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley and Morgan Police Chief Lance Hatcher confirmed the presence of two shooters on Oct. 3. Shortly after, Baltimore and university police released multiple images of alleged suspects connected to the shooting.
Wilson said he and the administration came to this decision “after very careful—and at times emotional—deliberation.”
Police announced the arrest of an unnamed teeanger, 17, and named Williams as a the second shooting suspect on Oct. 13.
