Beginning Monday, Aug. 21 to Sept. 9, the bridge connecting Morgan State University’s main campus to the School of Global Journalism and Communications (SGJC) building–and other academic buildings in the south campus area– is scheduled to be closed.
The reason for the closure is to replace steam pipes that run beneath the bridge’s paved walkway.
This closure will affect all students and staff traveling to or from SGJC or the Center for the Built Environment and Infrastructure Studies (CBEIS).
Several students voiced their concerns about how they will reach their classes, as this bridge serves as the primary pathway to the school’s main campus.
“It’s already very exhausting to walk such a long distance to communications and it’s inconvenient to walk alongside the street,” said Morelys Urbano, a junior multimedia journalism major. Until the construction is complete and the bridge reopens, Morgan officials have encouraged students to use the sidewalks along Hillen Road and Perring Parkway as alternative routes to both SGJC and CBEIS.
Several areas of Morgan’s campus are active construction zones, the academic quad being one of the largest construction projects on campus, which began construction in the summer of 2022.
Kim McCalla, associate vice president of facilities, design, and construction at Morgan explained that the steamwork should be complete by the spring. Future projects also include plans to begin construction around Truth Hall.
