Morgan State University is set to purchase the land of the former Lake Clifton High School in East Baltimore, according to the Baltimore City Department of Real Estate.

The university plans to use the 59 acres of land, along with another 14 acres adjacent to the school, to develop a multipurpose convocation center.

The official Land Disposition Agreement (LDA) will be presented to the Baltimore City Board of Estimates for a vote of approval on April 6.

If approved, the university will be another step closer to establishing a satellite campus with mixed-use housing, a wellness center and other amenities.

In the fall 2021 town hall, University President David Wilson previously said the university plans to utilize the land as a large extension of Morgan’s campus.

“It is our intent to build the first building on that site and it will be a multipurpose convocation center that could house between 12,000 and 15,000 people…we could have major events there.” Wilson said, “Our athletic teams would [also] have an incredible place to play.”

Along with the purchase, Morgan plans to redevelop the property over a period of 15 to 20 years with a projected $200 million minimum investment total, according to the office of Baltimore City Comptroller.

As a part of the LDA, Morgan plans to construct a convocation center, demolish the former school building, complete a Master Plan approved by the Baltimore City Planning Commission, stabilize the Clifton Park Valve House and restore five public artworks currently placed at Lake Clifton.

“Although this isn’t the final step in the process, this agreement is truly an important step in what will be a monumental advancement in Morgan’s history,” Wilson said in a press release.
