Morgan State’s basketball team (0-3) hosted the Naval Academy (2-2) in the Hill Field House Tuesday night and won the game with a final score of 75-51.
The game started slowly with both teams missing shots. The Naval Academy got on the board early with a layup from center Evan Wieck.
Although the Bears continued to miss early shots, forward David Syfax remained aggressive offensively in securing rebounds. This provided more opportunities on the offensive side of the ball.
Morgan’s offense began to heat up with a three-point shot from guard Stanley Davis. The Naval Academy quickly responded with a three of their own from guard Hasan Abdullah.
Offensively the Academy had great ball movement but weren’t scoring any points because of Morgan’s defense.
Immediately after checking into the game guard Tyler Streeter scored a three for Morgan. This opened the lead up to six for Morgan, but they kept allowing the Academy to stay in the game by sending them to the free throw line.
Abdullah tried to rally his team after making both free throws and scoring a layup the next possession. The momentum quickly shifted back to the Bears when guard Martez Cameron stole a pass and made the layup.
Turnovers continued to hurt the Naval Academy’s offense. The score at halftime 34-25 Morgan.
Defensively the Academy didn’t seem to have an answer for Syfax. He started the second half with a three and continued to secure rebounds.
Morgan played with a comfortable lead the whole game, but this didn’t stop the Naval Academy from playing hard. Abdullah takes advantage of a blocked shot on defense and makes a layup on the fast break.
The Bears continued to smother the Naval Academy’s offense by contesting their shots and hustling to grab rebounds. The offense began to run away with the game after a great pass from Guard Sherwyn Devonish-Prince to Syfax resulted in a dunk.
The defense ended the game with an exclamation point by blocking a shot on the Naval Academy’s last possession.
